George Bernard Shaw's sparkling, romantic comedy of love and war.
Arms and the Man
Arms and the Man, George Bernard Shaw’s first success and one of the theatre’s most enduring
romantic-comedies, takes place in 1885 in the home of the Petkoffs, the “richest” family in a
small town in Bulgaria. The Bulgarians are at war with the Serbians, and both sides have
enlisted “mercenary” officers to lead their armies. Following an improbably disastrous defeat,
one of the Serb mercenaries - a Swiss officer named Bluntschli takes refuge in the Petkoff
household and finds himself at the mercy of the young lady of the house, Raina. Raina, a
romantic and self-dramatizing young woman, though betrothed to Sergius, the bombastic hero of
the recent Bulgarian victory, takes pity on Bluntschli and agrees to shelter him. Despite her initial
belief that the “scientific” warrior Bluntschli is a coward, Raina is slowly won over by his
pragmatism and charm.

In the second act, domestic issues are highlighted as Raina’s father and Sergius return from the
war. The marriage plans of the young couple are complicated when Sergius begins to
acknowledge his attraction for the Petkoff’s spirited housemaid, Louka, and Bluntschli
reappears. Eventually, the romantic delusions of the characters are exposed, allowing for a
delightfully subversive ending.
